Did you know November is National Novel Writing Month?
It is. Yours truly will be partaking this year in "NaNoWriMo" - an annual creative writing project that brings together writers from all over the world. The goal is to write 50,000 words in one month, about the length of a short novel. I heard about this challenge in college, and thought it would be fun to participate someday. Do you ever get tired of that word, "someday"? I do. So 2014 is the year to join with other crazy writers from down the street and across the world in an endeavor to write that book I've always wanted to. I have a basic outline for the books, and a few chapter ideas, but I'm jumping into this with less of a plan than I'd like. But we'll see where I get! Notable novels of roughly 50,000 words include The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Brave New World, and The Great Gatsby. Yours truly will not be penning the next great american novel. I don't have a plan, a title, or much writing experience to rely on. In Junior High I started writing a novel, and while I haven't revisited the manuscript in a few years, I thought surely that's at least 50,000 pages, so I have a good benchmark of how many words I need to write. I checked the document today, and that novel is only 17,000 words. Yikes! But you must start a new novel from scratch in NaNoWriMo, so that manuscript will have to wait to be worked on for awhile. Regardless of whether I make the 50,000 word goal, the point of this contest for me can be summed up in two words: just write.
